IHJ Policy Roundtable 2026
[Event Report] IHJ Policy Roundtable with Professor John Ikenberry — “Return of Liberal Internationalism”
The International House of Japan (IHJ) convened an IHJ Policy Roundtable on May 29, 2026, with Professor G. John Ikenberry, Albert G. Milbank Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. The roundtable explored the future of the liberal international order under the theme “Return of Liberal Internationalism.”
Professor Ikenberry discussed the evolution of the U.S.-led hegemonic order of liberal internationalism and its current crisis. Drawing on his trail-blazing scholarship on liberal internationalism, he presented new ideas on why the Liberal International Order (LIO) might be in the position to rise again in the future, especially after the end of the Second Trump Presidency.
The presentation was followed by a lively discussion among participants especially focusing on: how the future liberal order might be looking like, how to deal with China inside such system, the difficulty of managing internal wealth distribution in liberal democracies and how this affects national commitment to providing global public goods, the role of US credibility in the eyes of other liberal democracies and the potential role for Japanese companies in supporting a new liberal order.
The roundtable provided a unique opportunity to discuss with one of the world’s leading experts in the field about the future of international order in an increasingly complex global environment. IHJ extends its sincere appreciation to Professor John Ikenberry for a stimulating and insightful discussion.
