IHJ Policy Roundtable 2026
[Event Report] US-Japan Relations and Japan’s Indo-Pacific Grand Strategy — IHJ Policy Roundtable with Saori Katada and Kei Koga
The International House of Japan (IHJ) convened an IHJ Policy Roundtable on April 30, 2026, with Professor Saori N. Katada of the University of Southern California and Associate Professor Kei Koga of Nanyang Technological University. The session was held under the theme “US-Japan Relations and Japan’s Indo-Pacific Grand Strategy.”
Drawing on their co-authored book, Japan’s Grand Strategy: Liminal Power in an Uncertain World, the speakers examined Japan’s Indo-Pacific grand strategy centered on the vision of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP). They discussed how Japan has sought to uphold a rules-based regional order while promoting stability, prosperity, and strategic resilience across the Indo-Pacific.
The discussion also addressed the increasingly uncertain international environment, including the second Trump administration and heightened tensions in Japan-China relations. Participants explored the security and geoeconomic challenges facing Japan, with particular attention to the future of the US-Japan alliance, supply chain restructuring, economic security, and regional multilateral cooperation.
IHJ extends its sincere appreciation to Professor Saori N. Katada and Associate Professor Kei Koga for an excellent and forward-looking discussion.
