Project Overview
This project conducts a joint opinion poll with the East Asia Institute (South Korea, hereinafter “EAI”). The survey aims to provide a foundation for Japan-South Korea cooperation—which is growing in strategic importance—by conducting an in-depth analysis of the current state of mutual understanding and public perceptions regarding key issues among the citizens of both countries, as well as to present trends in public opinion between Japan and South Korea and policy implications.
Following this, we will announce the results at a joint international press conference, prepare a report, and host a public forum with researchers from think tanks in each country, with the aim of further advancing regional cooperation in the future. While 2026 marks the first time this poll has been conducted between the two countries, in 2025, the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI, U.S.) conducted a joint public opinion survey involving Japan, the U.S., and South Korea. This marked the first time IHJ had conducted an international opinion poll.
Japan-South Korea Joint Opinion Poll
The two institutions began coordinating the questions around May 2026, and subsequently developed a common survey questionnaire based on mutually agreed-upon core questions. Each institution is conducting the survey tailored to its own national context. The questionnaire primarily consists of questions regarding perceptions of each country, economic policies, and views on security and geopolitics.
Both countries will conduct the survey online in late July and are scheduled to hold a joint press conference on August 3 at the Institute of East Asian Studies in Seoul (details and reports will be posted at a later date).

Ken Jimbo is a Professor at Keio University and Managing Director at IHJ. He is an expert in international politics, security studies, and Japan’s foreign and defense policy, with experience in various government-related positions.

Specializing in East Asian international relations, Misato Nagakawa has planned and implemented numerous educational activities focused on related themes of peace and reconciliation.
Program Officer
Ryusei Nosaka
Ryusei Nosaka is a Program Officer at IHJ, specializing in emerging technologies and security. He has worked at the International House of Japan, where he was involved in research on geoeconomics and the development of new initiatives.
Deputy Executive Director
Mitsuyoshi Yamashita
Mitsuyoshi Yamashita is Deputy Executive Director at IHJ, where he oversees and coordinates the organization’s programs. He has extensive experience in corporate support, human resource development, and study-abroad assistance.
Coordination Manager
Masashi Yui
Masashi Yui (PhD in Public Policy) is Coordination Manager at IHJ. He specializes in public administration and public policy and is engaged in research and analytical work on administrative reform and the international comparative evaluation of institutions.
