With Le Corbusier’s 17 architectural sites having been added to the World Heritage List last year, modern architecture is receiving much attention. However, in Japan, even widely recognized master works of modern architecture are being torn down due to physical aging and deterioration. In this program, we will reexamine the philosophy inscribed in Japanese modern architecture and the importance of preservation by inviting three experts in the field.
Architect
Aoki Jun
Finished the Master’s Program in the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. After working at Arata Isozaki & Associates, he established his own practice, Jun Aoki & Associates, in 1991. Representative works include Fukushima Lagoon Museum (Architectural Institute of Japan Annual Award), Louis Vuitton Omotesando (BCS Award), the Aomori Museum of Art, and the Miyoshi City Hall, Kiriri. His activities cross the boundaries of different genres, designing for a broad range of architecture including public buildings, commercial buildings, and private houses, as well as installation art. He was awarded the Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize in 2005.
Professor, Kagoshima University
Ajisaka Toru
After graduating from Waseda University in 1983, he joined Mitsubishi Estate and worked in the design management division. For 30 years he was in charge of many projects including new construction as well as preservation and renovation. He assumed his current position in 2013 and has been researching the rejuvenation of historical architecture and modernist architecture and architects. He was highly involved in the preservation and renovation of I-House in 2005-06.
Professor, Kyoto University of Technology
Matsukuma Hiroshi
After graduating from Kyoto University, he joined the architectural office of Maekawa Kunio. In April 2000 he became an assistant professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, and professor in October 2008. He earned his Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Tokyo. He is a specialist in the history of modern architecture and architectural design theory. From May 2013 he has served as chair of DOCOMOMO Japan and as a member of the steering committee of the National Archives of Modern Architecture of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
