*This event now concluded.

  • Wednesday, April 17, 2019, 7:00 pm
  • Venue: Lecture Hall, International House of Japan
  • Artist: Derek Gromadzki (Poet/Translator; US-Japan Creative Artists Program Fellow)
  • Language: English (with consecutive interpretation; original texts will be provided)
  • Co-sponsored by the Japan-US Friendship Commission (JUSFC)
  • Admission: Free (reservations required)

Derek Gromadzki will discuss and read from his book in progress, Horology. He will highlight how the work he undertook with Sayuri Okamoto translating excerpts from Gozo Yoshimasu’s Naked Memos and editing the companion notes to Yoshimasu’s poetry for Alice, Iris, Red Horse (New Directions, 2016) piqued his interest in poetry as a temporally dynamic medium of expression, which in turn drew his attention to the differences and similarities among intercultural conceptions of time and means of timekeeping, the basis of Horology, his second book. Gromadzki will give an overview of the time he spent in Japan researching and conducting interviews with artisans, writers, and academics as a JUSFC Fellow, which will address the influential role of Japanese chrono-culture in his latest project before reading excerpts from it and answering audience questions.
