For this lecture, we have invited Sou Fujimoto, one of the most prominent architects in Japan, as the speaker. He says, “By crossing over the boundaries of body, architecture, city and nature, I try to create architectural works that offer unique inspirations one cannot find elsewhere, but at the same time, have implications for everywhere. I believe it is a process of setting various and new archetypal landscapes into human history.”
Architect
Sou Fujimoto
Born in Hokkaido in 1971. A graduate of the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, he established Sou Fujimoto Architects in 2000. In 2016 he won the first prize for “Pershing,” one of the sites in the French competition called ‘Réinventer Paris,’ following victories in the Invited International Competition for the New Learning Center at Paris-Saclay’s Ecole Polytechnique and the International Competition for the Second Folly of Montpellier in 2014. In 2013 he became the youngest architect to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London. His notable works include Final Wooden House (2008), House N (2008), Musashino Art University Museum & Library (2010), House NA (2011), Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 (2013), and many more.

Fujimura Ryuji
An Associate Professor of Tokyo University of the Arts since 2016. Besides architectural design, education, and criticism, Mr. Fujimura has been working on projects involving the wider society such as city management with public participation, projects complicated by the aging and financial problems of public facilities. His major works include “House of House” and “BUILDING K.”

Kobayashi Masami
After receiving a Master’s in Architecture from the University of Tokyo, Dr. Kobayashi jointed Kenzo Tange Associates. Prior to his current position, he served as a Lecturer and Associate Professor at Meiji University and Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. His main publications include Public Space Design with Citizen Participation (X-Knowledge, 2015). He is a trustee of the International House of Japan.
