As the long-lasting military government of Myanmar (Burma) made compromises with Western countries and opposition parties, the country became a focus of world attention. Aung San Suu Kyi returned to politics in April 2012, and it is reported in the media that Myanmar is now rapidly moving toward democratization under the Thein Sein administration. At the same time, Myanmar is attracting the attention of overseas companies as the “last frontier of Asia” with its opening of the economy.
What is the current political and social situation in Myanmar, one and a half years after the advent of the new administration? Professor Nemoto will comprehensively explain the present situation of Myanmar, clarifying the challenges the country faces.

Studied in the doctoral program at International Christian University. Professor Nemoto specializes in history, especially modern history in Southeast Asia concentrating on Myanmar. He assumed his current position in 2007.
