Ethnic divisiveness has been increasing while there are fewer borders in economics and finance or in global issues such as the environment. We will think together on how to create peace in concrete terms with Dr. Akashi, who was committed to settling a number of ethnic conflicts as a UN as well as a Japanese official.

Akashi Yasushi

After graduating from the University of Tokyo, Dr. Akashi obtained his master’s degree at the University of Virginia as a Fulbright Scholar and worked toward his doctorate at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and at Columbia University. He first joined the United Nations Secretariat in 1957 as a political affairs officer and held various positions such as Under-Secretary-General for Public Information and Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs. Before leaving the United Nations in 1997, he was designated the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cambodia, and the Special Representative for the Secretary-General for the former Yugoslavia until 1995. Dr. Akashi is currently Representative of the Government of Japan on Peace-Building, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction in Sri Lanka. He also serves as a special professor at Kobe University.
