Culture can extract our latent potential and revitalize our economy. Mr. Kondo will talk about Japan’s role and responsibility toward the advancement of civilization through culture.

Former Commissioner for Cultural Affairs

Kondo Seiichi

After graduating from the Faculty of Education and Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, University of Tokyo, Mr. Kondo joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972. He held prominent positions including UNESCO Ambassador, Deputy Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris, Deputy Director-General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Counsellor for Public Affairs, and then Minister, Embassy of Japan in Washington and Ambassador to Denmark. He was the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs from 2010 to 2013. He is currently an advisor to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan, project professor of Tokyo University and guest professor of Keio University, and visiting professor of the Tokyo University of the Arts, Doshisha University and Seisa University. He also serves chairperson of the Nagano Cultural Promotion Agency.
