This series invites alumni of the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies, a center in Yokohama providing advanced Japanese language education. This time, we welcome Mr. Jason P. Hyland, former acting U.S. ambassador to Japan. Jason Hyland, now President of MGM Resorts Japan, has spent 15 years in this country, and worked on U.S.-Japan relations even longer. He offers his observations of Japan from his time as a student, reporter, diplomat, and now businessman.

Became Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, U.S. Embassy Tokyo, on January 18, 2017 after previously serving as Deputy Chief of Mission there since July 2014. Has worked extensively on political-military issues but also is a strong advocate for US-Japan business partnerships, having worked closely with the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Keidanren, Keizai Doyukai, and other organizations. Appointed to his current position in August 2017. Graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in History. Received his M.A. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and his M.S. from the National War College. Also served as a Visiting Foreign Scholar at the University of Tokyo and studied at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies. Speaks and reads Japanese and is also fluent in Ukrainian, Spanish, and Azerbaijani.
